Introduction

Americans rely on their mobile devices to get things done. During an emergency, this includes calling 911, receiving weather alerts, or sharing video with law enforcement officials. Wireless network infrastructure makes all of that possible, but how reliable is it?

This interactive map displays wireless outages that network operators reported to the Federal Communications Commission from 2009 to 2016. Select a year from the drop-down. Click on a dot to see the number of users affected at that location. The colors correspond to the cause of the outage. You can also select a cause to see only those related outages.
