10 | 1240 Alexander Avenue, Tacoma, Washington | Gypsum board manufacturer | 16 | Yes-April 28, 2000 | Yes | According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 16 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this site in April 1984. At the time of EPA’s investigation, G-P Gypsum was operating at this site. G-P manufactured wallboard and used a closed system to add vermiculite to wallboard slurry. EPA collected one sample from a bag of vermiculite that was labeled as originating from South Carolina. Sampling results indicated no detectable levels of asbestos. Polarized light microscopy (PLM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to analyze the sample. EPA also observed that the site was paved and therefore concluded that if any vermiculite was present in the soil, the pavement would help reduce exposure risk by preventing asbestos fibers from getting into the air. On the basis of observations made during the site visit and the sampling results, EPA decided no further action was necessary. |
