5 | 150 Marble Street, Calumet City, Illinois | Agricultural chemical manufacturer | 1,512 | Yes-March 11, 2000 | No | According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 1,512 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this site between January 1967 and April 1968. The area surrounding this site was highly industrial. At the time of EPA's site visit, this facility was inactive. Swift and Company's Agricultural Chemical Division had operated at the site from 1969 to approximately 1980 as a manufacturer of fertilizers and pesticides. After Swift ceased operations at the site, a wrecking company demolished the structures on the site and filled the area with demolition materials to an elevation of 10 to 20 feet above the existing grade. EPA found very little information on Swift and Company's use of vermiculite. According to EPA, the vermiculite was probably used in lawn fertilizers. In 1999, EPA performed a time-critical removal action to "cap" this site with a soil barrier to prevent migration of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and lead from this site. According to EPA, this cap would provide a barrier against any asbestos contamination at the site. On the basis of this information, EPA determined that no further action was needed. |
