5 12345 South Marshfield, Calumet Park, Illinois Former exfoliation facility 67,355 Yes-March 3, 2000 Yes According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 67,355 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this site between January 1966 and June 1974. Furthermore, according to a report issued in 1953 by the Bureau of Mines (at that time located in the U.S. Department of the Interior), this facility had been a vermiculite exfoliation plant. EPA attempted to visit this site in March 2000, but could not find the former location of this facility. EPA later determined the correct address for the site. While EPA was visiting the site in 2001, a distributor of large industrial pipe fittings occupied the site. EPA observed vermiculite material in various areas at the site. Seven soil samples (including one duplicate) were collected at the site in October 2001, and all the samples contained less than 1-percent asbestos. The samples were analyzed using polarized light microscopy (PLM). On the basis of this information, EPA decided no further action was needed at this site.
