5 | 5500 West 47th Street, Chicago, Illinois | Freight operations | 2 | Yes-April 4, 2000 | No | According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 2 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this site in January 1984. According to information EPA gathered during its investigation, Freight A-Ranger--a truck freight company--had used this facility for docking operations from 1978 until the time of EPA's site visit. Before Freight A-Ranger began operations at the site, the facility had been used since its construction in the 1950s by other companies for docking operations. At the time of EPA's visit, Freight A-Ranger was leasing the site from Finch & Barry Properties, LTD. According to a Finch representative, Finch purchased the site in 1998 and an environmental assessment was performed at the time. EPA reviewed the findings of the environmental assessment and found no concerns about asbestos contamination. The Finch representative was not aware that any vermiculite ore was used at the site. During its visit, EPA did not find any evidence of vermiculite ore. The site was in an industrial area with residences three blocks away. On the basis of this information, EPA determined no further action was needed. |
