5 11426 S. Perry Street, Chicago, Illinois Blends and packages products used to produce iron and steel 200 Yes-April 18, 2000 Yes According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 200 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this site between May 1982 and August 1982. At the time of EPA's site visit, this facility had been in operation since 1975 and blended and packaged various products, including additives used to help purify molten steel and insulating products used in the production of molten iron and steel. According to a company representative, vermiculite had been received at this facility in bags by truck or rail and blended with other materials to produce an additive that helps purify molten steel. The additive was sold to various steel manufacturers. Vermiculite ore was not exfoliated at the site. In the early 1980s, the company replaced vermiculite based products with rice hull ash, although the company continued to make vermiculite based products on a sporadic basis as late as 1998. According to the company representative, the company obtained vermiculite ore from a W.R. Grace facility located in Enoree, South Carolina (this site is listed separately in this database). The representative said the company did receive two railcar loads of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine in 1979 but then discontinued purchasing the ore from that facility. This site was located in a residential area. EPA collected four soil samples and none of the samples had detectable levels of asbestos. Polarized light microscopy (PLM) was used to analyze the samples. On the basis of this information, EPA determined that no further action was needed.
