5 | 3426 E 89 Street, Chicago, Illinois | Steel manufacturer | 1,803 | Yes-April 18, 2000 | No | According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 1,803 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this site between October 1967 and October 1969. According to the information EPA gathered during its investigation, this facility had begun steel manufacturing operations in the 1880s and started shutting down its operations in stages in the early 1970s, and closed in 1992. During the site visit, EPA officials did not observe any vermiculite. A company official said, to his knowledge, the company had never used vermiculite ore. In 1993, the facility entered into the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency's voluntary cleanup program. During the cleanup of the 570-acre site, the facility building was demolished and asbestos insulation removal was conducted. In 1997, the company received a letter from the state indicating the site had been cleaned to residential standards and needed no further action. At the time of EPA's visit, the company planned to sell the property for redevelopment. On the basis of this information, EPA decided no further action was needed. |
