5 | 1008 Oak Street, De Kalb, Illinois | Former exfoliation facility | 44,745 | Yes-March 16, 2000 | No | According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 44,745 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this site between January 1967 and December 1982. In addition, according to a 1953 report issued by the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines, this facility had been a vermiculite exfoliation plant. The area surrounding the site was used for commercial, industrial, and residential purposes. Information collected during EPA's investigation indicated that FE Schundler operated at this site until 1959, when Mica Pellets took over operations. Mica Pellets went out of business in 1980. At the time of EPA's visit, a printing company was operating on the site. When the printing company purchased the property in 1991, a Phase I environmental assessment had been performed. EPA requested, but did not receive, a copy of the report describing the results of this assessment to confirm that asbestos was not identified as a concern. During its investigation of the site, EPA found no visible evidence of vermiculite or waste material at the site. On the basis of this information, EPA determined no further action was needed. |
