5 | 525 Kentucky Street, Quincy, Illinois | Chemical manufacturer | 280 | Yes-April 26, 2000 | No | According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 280 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this site between March 1960 and March 1973. At the time of EPA’s visit, the area surrounding the site was used for residential and commercial activities. On the basis of its investigation, EPA determined that the building on the site was purchased in 1997 from a janitorial supply company and, at the time of EPA’s visit, a small woodworking shop was operating in a part of the building. Kalo Inoculant—a chemical manufacturer—had occupied the site from 1951 until 1973 and then Kalo Laboratories occupied the site from 1974 until 1982. Kalo Agricultural Chemicals had occupied the site from 1983 until 1985, and then the site was vacant until 1991 when it was purchased by the janitorial supply company. EPA did not see any vermiculite on the property during the site visit. Because there were no unpaved areas on the property, no soil could be sampled. Also, there were no vermiculite materials present that could be sampled. On the basis of this information, EPA determined no further action was necessary. |
