5 | 1 N. Broadway, Gary, Indiana | Steel manufacturer | 52.6 | Yes-September 29, 2000 | No | According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 52.6 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this site in February 1968. During the site visit, company officials said that Libby vermiculite may have been used as insulation in some of the buildings on the site. However, company officials were unable to determine which buildings or even if the buildings still existed. This facility also used unexfoliated vermiculite ore in plastic bags as an insulation cap for molten steel. The vermiculite ore would melt into the slag, which was then discarded. The facility stopped using vermiculite ore in 1986 (approximately 15 years before the site visit). In the early 1970s, the facility had 13 blast furnaces and only 4 remained on the site. In the past, trucks delivered bags of vermiculite to the facility and the bags were stacked in storage bins by the blast furnaces. During the site visit, the bins were inspected and no residual vermiculite was visible. No one could remember the location of the central storage area for the bags. On the basis of this information, EPA decided that no further action was necessary. |
