5 | 1355 S. White Road, Indianapolis, Indiana | Chemical manufacturer | 5.25 | No | No | According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 0.25 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this site in August 1967 and another 5 tons were shipped in August 1977. On April 18, 2000, EPA spoke by phone to a representative of Eli Lilly. In response to this call, the company representative conducted an investigation to determine if Eli Lilly had ever used vermiculite ore from Libby, Montana, and if any of the ore still remained at the site. In his response to EPA on the results of this investigation, the company official reported that this facility had used vermiculite as an "oil-dry" agent to absorb oil from around machinery. The official said the company had undertaken efforts in 1992 to dispose of all existing vermiculite in stock. Records from the company's quality control department and interviews with employees confirmed that the vermiculite was not in direct contact with the products made by the company. At the time of EPA's investigation, the company no longer stocked vermiculite. On the basis of this information, EPA determined that no further action was needed. |
