5 U.S. Highway No. 50, Shoals, Indiana Gypsum board manufacturer 126 Yes-May 2, 2000 No According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 126 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this site between August 1974 and March 1977. According to information EPA collected during its site investigation, National Gypsum Company began operating at this site in 1955. At the time of EPA's visit, the company made wallboard of various grades and for various uses. According to company officials, this facility received vermiculite ore from Virginia Vermiculite Ltd. located in Louisa, Virginia. (This company is listed separately in this database). The officials did not believe the facility had ever received any ore from Libby, Montana. Vermiculite ore was not exfoliated at this site. The vermiculite was received by truck in 3,000 pound bags, stored until used, and then dumped through a semi-enclosed route where it was mixed with other materials to make wallboard. The company officials provided documentation indicating that the ore from Virginia Vermiculite did not contain asbestos. The officials said, previously, waste wallboard had been disposed of in an on-site landfill; however, this landfill had been closed under Illinois state law in 1998. Based on this information, EPA determined no further action was necessary.
