5 Street address unknown, Shoals, Indiana Gypsum board manufacturer 850 Yes-May 2, 2000 No According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 850 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this site between March 1973 and May 1980. According to information EPA gathered during its investigation, U.S. Gypsum began operating at this site in 1955 and made wallboard of various grades and for various uses. Vermiculite was not exfoliated at this site. At the time of EPA's visit, a company representative said this facility received vermiculite ore from a W.R. Grace facility located in South Carolina. The company representative did not provide EPA with information regarding whether the ore from South Carolina had asbestos in it. The ore was received by truck in 3,000 pound bags, stored until used, and then dumped through a semi-enclosed route where it was mixed with other materials to make wallboard. Previously, waste wallboard had been disposed of in an on-site landfill; however, this landfill was closed under Indiana state law in 1997. The representative said they had no knowledge of the facility ever receiving vermiculite ore from Libby, Montana. On the basis of this information, EPA decided no further action was needed.
