2 | 150 Whitman Avenue, Metuchen, New Jersey | Active exfoliation facility | Unknown | Yes-February 7, 2000 | Yes | While there were no available shipping records indicating that this site received Libby ore, it was listed in reports published by the U.S. Geological Survey as an active exfoliation plant from 1969 to 1999. As a result, EPA officials decided to inquire about the facility's operations as a part of its review of sites that may have received Libby ore. At the time of EPA's February 2000 investigation, this facility was the only active exfoliation plant in New Jersey. The facility was located in a residential neighborhood and began operations in 1951 and, according to interviews with company officials; the facility obtained vermiculite ore from mines in China and South Africa and had never used or purchased ore from the Libby mine. The company sold exfoliated vermiculite for use in horticultural, industrial, construction, and swimming pool applications (used to make a level base for above-ground swimming pools). EPA collected 12 samples of vermiculite ore from indoor storage piles; none of the samples contained detectable levels of asbestos. Each of the samples was analyzed using polarized light microscopy (PLM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). On the basis of this information, EPA determined no further action was necessary. |
