5 401 Main Street NE, Minneapolis, Minnesota Former exfoliation facility 4,785 Yes-April 14, 2000 Yes According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 4,785 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this company between January 1967 and February 1973. According to reports issued in 1953 and 1964 by the Bureau of Mines (at that time located in the U.S. Department of the Interior), this facility had been a vermiculite exfoliation plant. A 1970 U.S. Geological Survey report also indicated that this facility was a vermiculite exfoliation plant. Information collected by the Minnesota Department of Health indicated that the B.F. Nelson Plant produced a variety of construction products during the time it operated. B.F. Nelson's vermiculite exfoliation operation began around 1940 and the company was acquired by the Certain-Teed Products Corporation in January 1971. When EPA visited the site, it was a residential area. EPA did not observe any vermiculite at the site. EPA collected three soil samples and found that none of the samples contained detectable levels of asbestos. The sampling report for this site could not be retrieved from storage so EPA could not determine the method used to analyze the samples. EPA determined no further action was needed.
