2 308 Gilligan Street, Building 8 (Navy Area), Port Newark, New Jersey Former exfoliation facility 195 Yes-May 4, 2000 No According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 195 tons of Libby ore were shipped to this site from 1970 to 1971. Also, a 1953 information circular issued by the Bureau of Mines (at that time in the Department of the Interior) indicated that a vermiculite exfoliation plant was located on Gilligan Street in Port Newark, New Jersey. EPA was unable to precisely locate this former facility. However, on the basis of a limited record search, EPA determined that the facility was likely located in an industrial area at the Port of Newark that was covered with large parking lots, old U.S. Navy warehouse buildings, and petroleum storage tanks. When EPA visited the suspected location, it found no evidence of an exfoliation plant or vermiculite storage piles. On the basis of this information, EPA decided no further action was necessary at this site.
