5 | 2162 Heller Road, Alpha, Ohio | Containerized coatings distributor | 100 | Yes-April 5, 2000 | No | According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 100 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this site between June 1985 and May 1986. According to a company official, Carboline began operations at the Heller Lane location between 1978 and 1979. This facility distributed containerized coatings that were manufactured at another plant in Xenia, Ohio. The coatings were mainly used in the fireproofing or fire protection of structural steel and electrical cable trays. The company official noted that company records indicated this facility had received four shipments totaling 40,000 pounds (20 tons) of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine from 1985 to 1986. According to this official, the vermiculite was used in efforts to develop a fireproofing product. The official said no exfoliation operations were used to produce this product. During its inspection of the site, EPA did not find any storage areas for vermiculite ore or furnaces that could be used to exfoliate the ore. On the basis of this information, EPA determined no further action was necessary. |
