5 | 745 Norton Avenue, Barberton, Ohio | Resin manufacturer | 1 | Yes-April 4, 2000 | No | According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 1 ton of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine was shipped to this site between May and October 1986. The area surrounding the site was used for light industrial and residential activities. Recreational facilities and wetland areas were located around the site. According to company officials, Midwest Rubber began operations at this location in 1970. At the time of EPA's site visit, the facility mixed custom rubber resins that were used to manufacture automobile seals, architectural seals for waterproofing, pipe gaskets, and appliance gaskets. Company officials confirmed that Midwest had purchased approximately 2,000 pounds (1 ton) of vermiculite ore from W.R. Grace in 1986 but did not know if this ore was from the Libby mine. According to these officials, the company purchased the ore to develop a new experimental product formulation for 3-M Corporation. This was a one-time experiment and no vermiculite remained at the site. The officials said Midwest did not exfoliate vermiculite ore and had not done so in the past. EPA saw no storage areas for vermiculite ore or furnaces for exfoliating ore. On the basis of this information, EPA determined no further action was needed. |
