5 795 Plasterbed Road, Port Clinton, Ohio Gypsum board manufacturer 2,244 Yes-April 4, 2000 No According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 2,244 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this site between January 1967 and November 1975. According to a Celotex company official EPA interviewed, American Gypsum Corporation operated the mines and the facility on the site from 1902 to 1939. Celotex took over operations from American Gypsum in 1939 and continued to mine gypsum and manufacture gypsum drywall for use in the building construction industry. At the time of EPA's visit, Celotex obtained vermiculite ore from Virginia Vermiculite, Ltd. in Louisa, Virginia (this facility is listed separately in this database.) According to the company official, approximately 25 to 50 tons of this ore were used yearly to manufacture fire-resistant drywall. The company provided documentation that indicated no fibrous asbestos minerals were present in the ore from Virginia. The company official stated that Celotex did not have the capability to exfoliate ore at the site. EPA concluded no further action was needed.
