5 1276 West Third Street (with facilities at several other locations), Cleveland, Ohio Building product manufacturer 29,755 Yes-March 6-8, 2000 Yes According to information EPA collected during its investigation, Cleveland Builders Supply Company had approximately 15 locations and facilities throughout the greater Cleveland area. The company consisted of three manufacturing divisions that manufactured building products, including concrete blocks, ready-mix concrete, pre-cast concrete shapes, and bricks. Around 1986, the company went out of business and sold or liquidated its properties to individual companies that engaged in similar operations in the Cleveland area. EPA obtained a list of facilities under the name of Cleveland Builders Supply Company and attempted to review as many of the locations as possible to determine if the facilities had received Libby ore and if the ore was exfoliated at the facilities. Owing to the large number of sites, EPA only performed a cursory inspection at eight of the sites. The sites in Cleveland were located at 2146 West Third Street, 2106 West 3rd Street, 2176 West Third Street, and West Third and Scothan Avenue. Other sites were located at 300 North State Road, Medina, Ohio; 661 Front Street, Berea, Ohio; Hummel and Engle Roads, Brook Park, Ohio; and Cook and Lorain Roads, North Ridgeville, Ohio. According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 29,755 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to Cleveland Builders Supply Company facilities between January 1967 and March 1984. EPA collected two soil samples at the site located at 2146 West Third Street in Cleveland, which was identified as a "milling" facility. The samples contained no detectable levels of asbestos. The samples were analyzed using polarized light microscopy (PLM). EPA found that all the former gypsum processing facilities that used vermiculite had been demolished. At the time of EPA's site visits, none of the facilities processed or exfoliated vermiculite ore and EPA did not observe any vermiculite at the sites. On the basis of this information, EPA determined no further action was needed.
