5 9819 Penniman Road, N. Bloomfield, Ohio Active exfoliation facility 1,710 Yes-March 1, 2000 Yes According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 1,710 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this site between September 1985 and August 1988. This facility was located in a sparsely populated, rural agricultural area. According to a company official, this facility began operations in 1984 or 1985 as a perlite and vermiculite packaging company. At the time of EPA's visit, PVP exfoliated vermiculite ore and packaged the exfoliated ore in bags. About half of the exfoliated ore was sold for horticultural uses and the rest was sold to foundries and to the construction industry. Vermiculite processing accounted for about 20 percent of the company's business and perlite processing accounted for the remaining 80 percent. Raw vermiculite was stored in covered storage bays. According to the company official, from approximately 1984 to 1989, the facility had received vermiculite ore from the Libby mine. At the time of EPA's site visit, the facility obtained vermiculite ore from Carolina Vermiculite Company in Woodruff, South Carolina (the site in Woodruff is listed separately in this database) and from a supplier in Virginia. The company official did provide documentation indicating that the ore from Carolina Vermiculite contained no asbestos. According to the company official, when the facility was expanded in 1994 or 1995, an environmental assessment was conducted. Core samples were collected and no contaminants were found. The official also said that W.R. Grace had not found any evidence of asbestos contamination in an air sampling study it conducted. The official did not provide copies of these studies. On November 28, 2000, EPA collected four soil samples at the PVP facility and none of the samples contained detectable levels of asbestos. The samples were analyzed using polarized light microscopy (PLM). On the basis of this information and the remote location of the facility, EPA determined no further action was needed.
