2 | 1 - 41 Jacobus Avenue, Tomkins Tidewater Terminal, Building # 35, South Kearney, New Jersey | Former exfoliation facility | Unknown | Yes-May 4, 2000 | No | Although there were no records indicating Libby ore was shipped to this site, an October 1953 information circular from the Bureau of Mines (in the U.S. Department of the Interior) indicated that American Vermiculite operated a vermiculite exfoliation plant in South Kearney, New Jersey. On the basis of discussions with municipal officials and a review of area maps, EPA determined the likely location of this facility was within the Tomkins Tidewater Terminal complex at the north end of building 35 on Jacobus Avenue. The municipal officials told EPA that American Vermiculite Products Corporation operated at the site between 1949 and 1954. At the end of 1954, F.E. Schundler Company continued processing vermiculite at the location until some time in 1958. After 1958, a company named Shaw began operations at the site, but it is not known whether that company’s operations involved vermiculite. At the time of EPA's site visit, building 35 was occupied by a trucking company that stored bulk food products in drums and small cans. EPA's inspection found no evidence of raw vermiculite ore outside the building. Although the interior of the building could not be accessed, EPA concluded it was highly unlikely that any vermiculite remained in the building from vermiculite operations that occurred during the late 1940s through the late 1950s. On the basis of the information collected about this site, EPA decided no further action was necessary. |
