5 | 2516 W. 3rd Street, Cleveland, Ohio | Chemical manufacturer | 168 | Yes-March 31, 2000 | No | According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 168 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this site between November 1980 and October 1981. This site was located in downtown Cleveland, Ohio and was surrounded by several small businesses. According to information EPA collected during its investigation, Topex Company had occupied the site until 1998. An environmental firm performed a removal action at the site from September through October 1998. According to an official of the environmental firm, the Topex Company had manufactured a dry, powdered chemical that was used to absorb impurities from hot steel. Vermiculite may have been an ingredient in this chemical. During removal activities, fly ash was removed from the building rafters and several 55-gallon drums (including two drums of vermiculite) were removed from the building. Following the removal activities, the building was power-washed, and the water from this activity was placed in drums and transported off-site for disposal. After the removal, a company that operates an industrial painting business leased the site and used the building for storage. On the basis of this information, EPA determined no further action was needed. |
