5 | 121 Lake Street, Gypsum, Ohio | Gypsum board manufacturer | 104 | Yes-March 31, 2000 | No | According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 104 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this site during March thru June 1973. This site was approximately 200 acres and consisted of a plant building, an on-site landfill, and inactive underground gypsum mines. The facility was bordered to the south by Sandusky Bay and to the east, north, and west by a mix of agricultural and residential areas. According to company officials, this facility began manufacturing gypsum products in the early 1900s. At the time of EPA's visit, the company exfoliated perlite ore, not vermiculite ore, and manufactured a variety of construction products including gypsum board. According to the company officials, U.S. Gypsum did not exfoliate vermiculite ore, and it had been 2 years (1998) since vermiculite had been used at the site. The officials did not know if the vermiculite was obtained from the Libby mine. The vermiculite had been mixed into slurry that was used to manufacture gypsum board. During its inspection of this site, EPA did not see any vermiculite ore. On the basis of this information, EPA determined no further action was needed. |
