5 | Grand Avenue District Yard, Milwaukee, Wisconsin | Former exfoliation facility | 63,175 | Yes-April 5, 2000 | Yes | According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 63,175 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this site between June 1967 and January 1981. According to information EPA gathered during its investigation, this facility had manufactured an asbestos insulation product, beginning in the 1930s. W.R. Grace purchased the operation and exfoliated vermiculite at the site until the mid-1980s. At the time of EPA's site visit, the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District had acquired the property and was financing a cleanup of the site, overseen by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. The cleanup was intended to remove asbestos contamination in the soil and clean up a landfill on the site where asbestos waste had been disposed of. At the time of EPA's visit, the site had been capped with soil and some soils along the nearby Menomonee River had been excavated. A section of the river was also excavated and was being regraded with stone. In a June 20, 2000 letter to EPA, the environmental contractor performing the cleanup stated that the results of confirmation soil sampling conducted at the site in June 2000 showed there was no asbestos contamination at the site. On the basis of this information, EPA took no further action. |
