2 226 Water Street, Albany, New York Former exfoliation facility Unknown Yes-April 7, 2000 No Although there were no W.R. Grace records indicating that Libby ore was shipped to this site, an October 1953 information circular issued by the Bureau of Mines (in the Department of the Interior) indicated that this facility was a vermiculite exfoliation plant. In a September 1964 Bureau of Mines circular, the facility did not appear on a list of exfoliation facilities. At the time of EPA's visit, a wholesale grocer was operating in a warehouse located on the site. The site was located in a mixed light industrial/commercial area and was adjacent to the Hudson River. EPA found that the Zonolite Company had operated at this location from approximately 1953 through 1956. In 1957, the property was owned by Associated Transport, and in 1960 it was purchased by a wholesale grocer. Since the vermiculite operations likely occurred for a short period of time and likely ended in 1956, EPA concluded it was highly unlikely that any vermiculite remained at the site. On the basis of this information, EPA decided no further action was necessary at this site.
