6 | FM 1856 at I-20, on Eskota, Sweetwater, Texas | Building products manufacturer | 2,250 | Yes-July 20, 2000 | No | According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 2,250 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this site between January 1967 and July 1979. At the time of EPA's visit, Georgia-Pacific Corporation was operating this facility as an active gypsum wallboard manufacturing facility. According to the information that EPA collected, the facility had been in operation since 1956. In the past, the facility had also manufactured plaster. Historically, Flintkote Company had operated at the facility, then Genstar Gypsum, and then Domtar, Inc. In 1995, Georgia-Pacific stopped producing a fire-retardant wallboard that contained vermiculite. Some vermiculite ore was still being stored on site in hoppers. The company representatives indicated that Libby ore had been used in the past; however, its use was discontinued in the 1970s when Grace began labeling bags as potentially containing asbestos. At the time of EPA's visit, the company obtained ore from a W.R. Grace facility in Enoree, South Carolina. (This site is listed separately in this database.) The Georgia-Pacific representatives provided documentation indicating the ore being used came from the Enoree facility. EPA observed no vermiculite ore waste at the site. On the basis of this information, EPA determined no further action was needed. |
