6 | Street address unknown, Highway 51A, Southard, Oklahoma | Gypsum plaster and wallboard manufacturer | 260 | Yes-July 17, 2000 | No | According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 260 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this facility between June 1972 and November 1973. After reviewing records and interviewing the plant manager, EPA determined that this facility manufactured gypsum products, specifically plaster and wallboard. The facility had been in operation since 1905, and U.S. Gypsum purchased it in 1912. According to the plant manager, at the time of EPA's visit, the facility was using vermiculite to produce fire-resistant wallboard, and the company obtained the vermiculite ore from the W.R. Grace facility in Enoree, South Carolina. (This site is listed separately in this database.) The facility received the vermiculite in 1,300-pound bags and stored the bags in a warehouse until needed. The vermiculite was poured into a hopper and then fed into the gypsum slurry. All vermiculite was consumed in the production process and no waste was generated. At the time of EPA's visit, the plant conditions were very dusty. EPA determined no further action would be needed. |
