6 | 1201 Mayo Shell Road, Galena Park, Texas | Gypsum board manufacturer | 572 | Yes-July 19, 2000 | No | According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 572 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this facility between April 1973 and April 1976. When EPA visited, this facility was an active gypsum manufacturing plant producing wallboard and wallboard paper. According to the plant manager, the facility had been operating since 1954 and was vacant before then. To the plant manager's knowledge, the facility had never used vermiculite ore from the Libby mine. According to the plant manager, for the past 15 years (since 1985), the facility had received vermiculite ore from a W.R. Grace facility located in Enoree, South Carolina. (The Enoree facility is listed separately in this database.) The vermiculite was added to the wallboard mixture to make it fire resistant. The ore was received in closed bags and stored for about 30 days until ready to use. No waste was generated from using the vermiculite and the empty bags were returned to W.R. Grace. EPA observed very little vermiculite at the site and did not see any vermiculite waste. EPA determined no further action was needed. |
