6 | 832 County Road 311, Rotan, Texas | Gypsum board manufacturer | 125 | Yes-July 19, 2000 | No | According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 125 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this facility between May 1968 and April 1973. When EPA visited, this facility was an active manufacturing plant producing gypsum wallboard, and according to company representatives, the plant had been in operation since 1929. National Gypsum had declared bankruptcy in 1991 but reopened again in 1993 under the same name. At the time of EPA's visit, the plant received vermiculite ore from the W.R. Grace facility in Enoree, South Carolina. (This site is listed separately in this database.) The vermiculite was mixed with the gypsum wallboard to help make it fire resistant. Vermiculite was used in approximately 35 to 45 percent of the company's products. The ore was received in 3,000 pound bags and introduced into the manufacturing process through a feeder hopper. Company representatives indicated that they were not aware of ever receiving Libby ore; however, they were only able to search records back to 1993, the year the company reopened after declaring bankruptcy. On the basis of this information, EPA determined no further action was needed. |
