6 | 3713 Highway 32 North, Hope, Arkansas | Active exfoliation facility | 1,152 | Yes-July 24, 2000 | No | According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 1,152 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this site from August to September 1991. At the time of EPA's visit, Scott's Company owned this facility and it was an active manufacturing and vermiculite expansion plant. The facility had been operating since 1989 and Scott's had purchased it from Grace-Sierra Horticulture Products in 1993. The facility was in a rural area with no nearby residences. According to the plant manager, at the time of EPA's visit, the facility received vermiculite from Virginia Vermiculite in Woodruff, South Carolina and, since around 1991, the facility had also obtained vermiculite from the W.R. Grace mine in Enroee, South Carolina. (Both of these facilities are listed separately in this database.) Before 1991, the facility obtained vermiculite from the W.R. Grace mine in Libby, Montana. The vermiculite ore was received by rail and off-loaded by conveyor to elevator silos. After the ore was expanded, Scott’s mixed it into potting soil and fertilizers. All waste was recycled through the production process. EPA saw evidence of spillage in the area of the conveyor and also noted that the operations in the warehouse area were dusty. Since EPA did not see any vermiculite waste piles at the site during its visit, it did not collect samples. EPA determined no further action was needed. |
