6 | 1822 N First Street, Albuquerque, New Mexico | Former exfoliation facility | 68,305 | No | No | According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 68,305 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this site between January 1967 and July 1988. This site is the former location of Southwest Vermiculite, a vermiculite exfoliation plant that operated at this site until approximately 1976, when it moved to 5119 Edith Boulevard NE in Albuquerque. (The Edith Boulevard site is listed separately in this database). An official from the city of Albuquerque visually inspected this site on March 14, 2000 and coordinated his findings with EPA. At that time, a used appliance dealer was operating at the site. The city official did not observe any vermiculite waste stockpiles. Since there were no vermiculite waste piles on the site, EPA decided not to collect samples. EPA determined no further action was needed at that time. In 2006, a preliminary assessment of this site was performed on behalf of EPA. This assessment was limited to file research; gathering of target data, such as, determining regional geology, groundwater, surface water, and surrounding population characteristics; and conducting an off-site visit. The site was still occupied by the appliance shop. No soil sampling was conducted. |
