2 | 325 Delaware Avenue, Buffalo, New York | Wallboard manufacturer | 58 | Yes-May 23, 2006 | No | According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 58 tons of Libby ore were shipped to this site between March 1968 and December 1969. When EPA visited this address in May 2006, the site was an office building in a commercial area in Buffalo. There were no rail lines or industrial facilities in the immediate area. At the time of EPA's visit, part of the office building was occupied by telecommunications companies and the Buffalo Public School Board. EPA determined that this location had likely been the headquarters and business office for National Gypsum. According to a National Gypsum official, the company did operate a gypsum wallboard manufacturing facility and a gypsum mine at 8630 Roll Road in Clarence, New York. That facility closed in 1982 and there were no records of vermiculite purchase or use. EPA visited the site in Clarence in May 2006 and found the property was in a rural area of western New York state with a mix of residential and commercial businesses nearby. Buildings on the property had been damaged by a fire and were severely dilapidated. There was also a landfill on the property that was reportedly used for waste wallboard materials. The current owner of that property leased it to various businesses, including landscapers. EPA determined that the Libby ore that was purchased was most likely consumed in the wallboard manufacturing process. On the basis of the information obtained from the site investigations and company officials and the relatively small amount of ore involved, EPA decided no further action was needed at either site. |
