7 | 33 S. 25th Street, Council Bluffs, Iowa | Agriculural products manufacturer | 38 | Yes-April 19, 2000 | Yes | According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 18 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this site on April 20, 1967 and 20 tons on May 19, 1969. At the time of EPA's visit, a company was leasing this site for painting operations and storage space. EPA noted that a high school was located across the street and to the west of the site and a manufacturing facility storage lot was located to the east. Ownership records indicated that Peet's Stock and Feed Store operated at this site from the 1920s until the late 1980s. The building on the site had truck access docks on the north side and rail access docks on the south side. When EPA visited, the rail spur to the south docks--which could have been used to transport vermiculite--had been removed but an active rail line still passed the docks. The building's interior did not appear to have any residue left from the stock and feed operation. Its exterior was mostly asphalt, concrete, or graveled drives. The only evidence of former vermiculite handling at the site was some mica flakes beneath some of the docks on the site. EPA concluded the most likely use of the vermiculite at this facility was to mix it with potting soil for resale. EPA found no indication that exfoliation activities occurred at this site. EPA collected two samples of dust and soil materials that contained at least some visible vermiculite flakes. These samples contained less than 1-percent asbestos. One sample was analyzed using polarized light microscopy (PLM) and the other was analyzed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). EPA determined no further action was needed. |
