7 | 4814 Fiber Lane, Wellsville, Kansas | Former exfoliation facility | 3,990 | Yes-September 7, 2000 | Yes | According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 3,420 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to Diversified Insulation between June 1977 and September 1980. The database also indicated that 570 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped between February and August 1981 to Shelter Shield, a company that had operated at a neighboring site. At the time of EPA's visit, a manufacturer and distributor of cellulose insulation products was operating at the former Diversified Insulation site (located at 4814 Fiber Lane). EPA noted that the layout of the facility and the presence of visible vermiculite in the field around a building were strong indications that this site had likely been operated by W.R. Grace or one of its subsidiaries as a processing facility for vermiculite ore. According to a representative of the cellulose insulation company, a chemist employed by the company had collected samples at the site that contained trace amounts (less than 1-percent) of asbestos. In December 2000, EPA collected three soil samples at this site and two of the samples contained less than 1-percent asbestos and the third sample had no detectable levels of asbestos, as analyzed using polarized light microcopy (PLM). EPA determined no further action was needed at the site. For the former Shelter Shield Insulation Sales site located nearby, at the time of EPA’s visit on September 7, 2000, a moving company was operating at this site. EPA found no visible evidence of vermiculite or mica and the current owner of the property had no knowledge of vermiculite use at the site. EPA determined no further action was needed at the former Shelter Shield site. |
