7 1367 S. Kingshighway Boulevard, St. Louis, Missouri Former exfoliation facility 29,565 Yes-March 30, 2000 Yes According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 29,565 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this site between July 1967 and June 1991. In addition, U.S. Geological Survey reports in 1975, 1980, 1985, and 1990 indicated that this facility was a vermiculite exfoliation plant. At the time of EPA's visit, a stone company using the site for industrial warehouse and storage space had been operating at the site since 1998. EPA confirmed that a vermiculite ore processing facility had previously operated at the site. A representative of the stone company said vermiculite had never been used or produced by her company. While walking though the building, EPA determined the location of the original furnace used to expand vermiculite ore. Vermiculite was visible along the walls near the area where the ore had been processed. On November 30, 2000, EPA collected five samples of dust/soil materials that contained at least some visible signs of vermiculite flakes. One sample, analyzed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), contained no detectable levels of asbestos. Of the remaining four samples, which were analyzed using polarized light microscopy (PLM), one contained less than 1 percent asbestos and the other three contained no detectable levels of asbestos. EPA determined no further action was needed.
