5 | 1 Mill Street, Buda, Illinois | Commercial chimney manufacturer | 2,750 | Yes-April 25, 2000 | No | According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 2,750 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this facility between January 1967 and December 1985. The site was located in a predominately residential/commercial area in a small town. As a division of Flintkote Company, Van Packer manufactured commercial chimneys at this site from the late 1960s until 1972. In 1972, Van Packer was sold and the new owner continued to manufacture chimneys at the site. At the time of EPA’s investigation, a Van Packer company official said that it had been 10 to 15 years since the company had received or used vermiculite at the site. In the past, Van Packer had received vermiculite in bags from Strong-Lite Company located in Seneca, Illinois, and added the vermiculite to refractory cement used to line some of the chimneys. (EPA also assessed the Seneca site, which appears separately in this database.) The Van Packer official said he did not know if vermiculite was used when Flintkote owned the site. During the site visit, EPA did not observe any vermiculite at the facility. On the basis of this information, EPA determined no further action was needed. |
