8 Street address unknown, Heath Star Route, Lewistown, Montana Gypsum board manufacturer 980 No No According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 980 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this site between May 1968 and March 1977. A representative of the Montana Department of Environmental Quality visited this site and discussed his findings with EPA via telephone. The state found this facility's practices for handling vermiculite were similar to the practices of other drywall facilities EPA had visited. Vermiculite was primarily delivered to the facility in bags that were then lifted to a hopper, cut open by an employee, emptied into the hopper, and discharged into the liquid drywall mixture. Since vermiculite was delivered in bags—not bulk—EPA concluded these work practices should not have resulted in widespread asbestos contamination. No information was available regarding the timeframes during which U.S. Gypsum operated at this site. On the basis of this information, the state and EPA agreed no further action was needed.
