8 | 88 Road 2AB, Cody, Wyoming | Gypsum board manufacturer | 4,910 | Yes-May 18, 2000 | No | According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 4,910 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this site between January 1967 and November 1988. EPA visited this site with a representative of the Wyoming State Department of Environmental Quality. At the time of the site visit, Celotex was operating the facility. According to Celotex representatives, this facility started operations in 1961 as Big Horn Gypsum and Celotex bought it in 1963. The officials believed Celotex stopped using Libby ore in 1985 or 1987. At the time of EPA's visit, the company officials said Celotex obtained vermiculite from the W.R. Grace facility in Enoree, South Carolina. (This Enoree facility is listed separately in this database.) Vermiculite was used in one of the company's wallboard products and was shipped to the site in supersacks. When needed, the supersacks were lifted up to a hopper, cut open by an employee, and the vermiculite was poured into a screw conveyor system that discharged the vermiculite into the liquid wallboard mixture. A Celotex employee who had worked at the facility for 25 years said, in the past, vermiculite was shipped by rail car and came in 100-pound paper bags, which were stored indoors until needed. EPA concluded that the shipping and handling practices (including, the receipt of the vermiculite in bags, not bulk), as described by the company representatives, should not have resulted in any widespread asbestos contamination. EPA determined that no further action was needed. |
