8 2120 Lane 16 1/2, Lovell, Wyoming Gypsum board manufacturer 2,040 Yes-May 17, 2000 No According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 2,040 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this site between February 1968 and January 1979. EPA visited this site with an official from the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality. According to Georgia Pacific officials, this plant was built in 1965 and Georgia Pacific bought it in 1967. At the time of the site visit, these officials said Georgia Pacific used vermiculite as an ingredient in one of its high-end, fire-resistant wallboard products. The company had stopped purchasing Libby vermiculite in the late 1970s or 1980s because the labeling on the bags indicated that the vermiculite contained asbestos. Around 1984, the company started buying vermiculite from the W.R. Grace facility in Enoree, South Carolina. (This Enoree site is listed separately in this database.) The company officials provided documentation indicating the ore being used was from Enoree. Georgia Pacific purchased the vermiculite in 50- or 100-pound bags and stored them in a raw materials warehouse. When needed, an employee would get a bag of vermiculite, cut it open, and pour the vermiculite into a hopper that discharged into the liquid wallboard mixture. EPA concluded that the shipping and handling practices described by the company representatives (especially, the fact that the vermiculite was received in bags, not bulk) should not have resulted in any widespread contamination. EPA determined no further action was needed.
