8 | Great Falls, Montana | Residence | Not applicable | Yes-exact date unknown but occurred in 2003 or 2004 | Yes | This site had been the residence of a former employee of the Robinson Insulation Company, located in Great Falls, Montana. (Robinson Insulation is listed separately in this database.) This former employee had brought vermiculite and waste rock home from the Robinson plant to construct a driveway for his home. Individual "nuggets" of pure asbestos could be handpicked from the driveway and contaminated material had also been tracked inside the house. EPA collected samples from the driveway and found average asbestos levels of 7 percent. EPA concluded that the presence of asbestos in the surface soil and dust was a threat to human health and any disturbance of the ground surface or dust could cause asbestos fibers to become airborne at unacceptable concentrations. On the basis of this information, EPA determined that a removal action was needed, which was completed in the spring of 2005. |
