8 | 3901 Highway 200 A, Stanton, North Dakota | Power plant | 1,209 | No | No | According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 1,209 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this site from August 1982 to April 1983. On April 3, 2000, EPA telephoned a representative of Basin Electric. The company representative said that the power plant used vermiculite as an anti-slag agent in furnaces. In response to EPA's request, Basin Electric sent a letter dated May 25, 2000, to EPA that described its vermiculite usage and stated that in the early 1980s, the company had purchased vermiculite from the Libby mine. In 1983, the company started purchasing vermiculite from Virginia Vermiculite, Ltd. (Virginia Vermiculite is listed separately in this database.) The company representative provided a laboratory report showing that the ore from Virginia Vermiculite contained no detectable levels of asbestos. This analysis was performed using polarized light microscopy (PLM). According to the company representative, the vermiculite was delivered by covered railcars and stored in silos. The representative also said that Basin Electric did not use exfoliated vermiculite. Because of the relatively short period of time that Libby ore was used at this facility and, since that time, the extensive throughput of vermiculite from Virginia Vermiculite in the silos and furnaces, EPA concluded that it would be unlikely that any residual Libby ore would remain at the facility. EPA determined no further action was needed. |
