2 45-15 Vernon Boulevard, Long Island City, New York Former exfoliation facility Unknown Yes-February 24, 2000 No Although there were no records that this facility received shipments of Libby ore, this facility was listed as a vermiculite exfoliation facility in an October 1953 information circular published by the Bureau of Mines (at that time in the U.S. Department of the Interior). At the time of EPA's visit, the owner was DHL, a shipping and trucking company. Discussions with relatives of the owner of the F.E. Schundler & Company indicated that the plant closed sometime in the 1960s and that vermiculite may have been used at the plant for a short period of time in the early days of its operation. EPA found no evidence of vermiculite products or vermiculite waste at the site. During the site visit, EPA was informed that the site had been repaved. Given the operations that were taking place at the site during EPA’s visit and the site’s condition, EPA concluded that it was highly unlikely that any vermiculite from the former exfoliation plant remained at the site. On the basis of this information, EPA determined no further action was needed.
