Grace shipping invoices did not contain any records indicating Libby ore was shipped to this site. However, a 1999 U.S. Geological Survey report indicated that this facility was a vermiculite exfoliation plant. When EPA visited this site, it was surrounded by vacant tribal land. EPA collected 6 air, 21 soil, and 5 dust samples at this site. The air samples did not contain detectable levels of asbestos; the soil samples contained less than 1-percent asbestos; and the dust samples contained less than 10,000 structures per square centimeter of wiped surface. The soil samples were analyzed using polarized light microscopy (PLM) and the air and dust samples were analyzed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Since all samples were below levels that would trigger a cleanup action, EPA determined no further action was needed. |
