2 | One Clay Street, Utica, New York | Former exfoliation facility | Unknown | Yes-April 20, 2000 | No | Although there were no W.R. Grace records indicating that Libby ore was shipped to this site, a September 1965 information circular issued by the Bureau of Mines (in the Department of the Interior) indicated there was a vermiculite exfoliation plant in Utica, New York. The facility did not appear on a list of exfoliation facilities in a 1966 Bureau of Mines circular. EPA had difficulty locating this facility but, after a records search and interviews with municipal officials, EPA determined the Zonolite Company likely operated at One Clay Street in Utica, New York, from January 1956 through May 1964. At the time of EPA’s visit, there were no buildings located on the site. Old industrial warehouse buildings bordered the property on two sides. On the basis of this information and the likelihood that vermiculite operations at this site ended in 1964, EPA concluded that it was highly unlikely that any vermiculite was present at the site and that no further action was necessary. |
