2 | 213 Factory Street, Watertown, New York | Specialty paper products manufacturer | 1,069 | Yes-May 10, 2000 | No | According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, a total of 1,069 tons of Libby ore was shipped to this facility from 1961 through 1988. Knowlton Specialty Paper Products began operations at this location in 1808. At the time of EPA's visit, the company employed 110 people and produced specialty papers, such as friction-type papers used in clutches and brakes and perfumed papers used in air fresheners. According to interviews with company representatives, from around 1984 until 1990, the company used vermiculite to perform a special project for Carborundum Company. The project involved the use of vermiculite and other substances to produce a ceramic-type material used in catalytic converters. After about 1990, Knowlton discontinued production of this material. All the vermiculite ore was used for the special project and the company no longer used vermiculite. On the basis of this information, EPA does not anticipate taking further action at this site. |
