Grace shipping invoices contained no records indicating Libby ore was shipped to this site, Bestwall Gypsum appeared on a list of W.R. Grace licensees and industry partners. At the time of EPA's visit, LaFarge Gypsum Corporation was manufacturing sheet rock at the site for commercial and residential structures. According to the information EPA collected, the Bestwall Gypsum Company had operated at the site until 1996, when LaFarge purchased the company and continued gypsum operations. During EPA’s visit, a LaFarge Gypsum official said the company received its vermiculite from a mine located in Louisa, Virginia, called Virginia Vermiculite Ltd.(the Louisa site is listed separately in this database). The company official said, to his knowledge, ore from the mine in Libby, Montana, was never used at the site. EPA collected three bulk/soil samples and one air sample at this site in September 2000. None of the samples contained detectable levels of asbestos. The bulk/soil samples were analyzed using polarized light microscopy (PLM) and the air sample was analyzed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). On the basis of this information, EPA decided no further action was necessary. |
