3 | Route 837, Duquesne, Pennsylvania | Steel manufacturer | 16 | No | No | According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 16 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this site in April 1968. EPA contacted representatives of U.S. Steel and was told this facility closed in 1986, and the company no longer had records related to the facility's operations. The officials said the blast furnaces and steel mill had been demolished and portions of the property had been redeveloped. EPA assumed that if this facility used vermiculite, its operations would have been the same as the U.S. Steel Fairless Works facility located in Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania (the Fairless Hills facility was also evaluated by EPA and is listed separately in this database). Accordingly, EPA assumed the vermiculite was received in bags. EPA considers vermiculite received in bags to be more contained, and thus likely to result in less asbestos exposure than if it is received in bulk. On the basis of this information, EPA decided no further action was necessary. |
