3 23rd & Pennsylvania Railroad, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Former exfoliation facility Unknown Yes-September 7, 2000 No Although an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices did not contain records indicating Libby ore was shipped to this site, an October 1953 information circular published by the Bureau of Mines (in the U.S. Department of the Interior) indicated that this facility was a vermiculite exfoliation plant. EPA determined that W.R. Grace had leased this facility from 1946 to 1953. At the time of EPA's visit, the property had been redeveloped and EPA could not confirm a location for the exfoliation facility. None of the existing buildings had the characteristics of an exfoliation facility and all of the buildings appeared to be 1960s-era construction, which would be after the time W.R. Grace had leased the site. The majority of the property was covered with buildings, roads, or paved parking lots. On the basis of this information, EPA decided no further action was necessary.
