3 | 662 Belmont Avenue, Southampton, Pennsylvania | Former exfoliation facility | Unknown | Yes-September 12, 2000 | Yes | An EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices contained no records indicating Libby ore was shipped to this site. However, this facility was listed as a vermiculite exfoliation plant in reports issued by the Bureau of Mines (in the U.S. Department of the Interior) in 1953 and 1964 and in reports issued by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1970 and 1975. According to the information EPA collected, Hyzer and Lewellen operated the facility until the late 1980s. At the time of EPA's visit, this property had been redeveloped and had two-story apartment buildings located on it. EPA determined that during the construction of the apartment buildings, the entire site was covered with several feet of fill dirt. Also, a dentist office was located in the building that was previously the Hyzer and Lewellen office. EPA found that about 25 percent of the property was paved. On an edge of the property, EPA did find what appeared to be vermiculite. EPA collected five soil samples, and none of these contained detectable levels of asbestos. The samples were analyzed using polarized light microscopy (PLM). On the basis of this information, EPA decided no further action was necessary. |
